Don’t Forget to Play

The other night in class, my teacher gave us an excellent reminder. I’m passing it along to you.

It takes a while to learn to write, he said. Some people dive right into a novel and teach themselves by writing. Some write five or six novels and never learn a thing. Some get so intent on the project they forget to play.

When you’re not being so serious and you’re letting chance come in, the magic happens.

Open up. Don’t govern the work. Wander around. Bang into it.

Trust yourself.

Let the magic happen.
